Stephen Miles

Stephen Edward Miles hit the ground running on June 13th, 1963 in Odessa, TX, with fiery red hair and a mischievous smile. Going full speed ahead until January 26th, 2021, in Magnolia, TX, when he passed on the the fishing lakes in the sky. He was at home surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Stephen lived his life on his own terms with a strong sense of what his life should be. With a boyish sense of humor, he pursued his lifelong passion for helping people. His own health challenges with Primary Immune Deficiency forced him in and out of hospitals and doctors offices through his early years. It was here that he found his passion for medical research and his pursuit of improving the lives of those affected by immunological disorders. His mother was his biggest advocate, whether it was fighting to get him healthy or support him in his studies. He inherited his sense of humor and confidence from his father who always encouraged him to live his own life.

Many medical professionals told him that due to his immunological disorder, he would not live past the age of 20, but with his stubborn nature, red hair and admirable courage, he boldly fought for his life and prevailed. Stephen found the love of his life while in the hospital during a bout of illness in Odessa, TX. His respiratory therapist, Suzan would soon become his wife and partner in crime for life.

He graduated from Texas Tech Medical School in 1991 serving as chief resident in pediatrics. He graduated from UTMB Galveston where he specialized in Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in 1996. Against the advice of his medical mentors, Stephen opened up his own private practice with the help of his wife in The Woodlands, TX with zero patients. Having a solo practice was impossible to most, but he was determined to ditch the white coats and substitute his favorite hunting shirt, jeans and pair of boots to do medicine “his Way”. Word of mouth spread through the community and Dr. Miles’ practice grew with loyal patients. He was proud to have a practice that allowed him to spend the kind of quality time that he felt complicated patients deserved.

Many expressed that their lives were changed after being treated by a kind, caring and compassionate doctor that had the knowledge to think outside the box and put all of the pieces together to properly diagnose even the most rare cases. He particularly loved his young patients and worked to provide a non-threatening atmosphere that made them feel welcomed and at ease. He had lost the sight in one eye during a junior high ball game. His young patience often asked about his eye and he patiently told them the story while he examined and distracted them. His calm, caring demeanor was one of the attributes his patients were grateful for.

For over 20 years, Dr. Miles served on the Medical Advisory Committee for the Immune Deficiency Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to patients with primary immunodeficiency disorders.

Following his philosophy of life to work hard at something you love, he also believed in spending quality time with family. He did just that with his wife and 2 beloved children, Dustin (Dusty) and Brittany (aka Sweet Tart). They thoroughly enjoyed their many family vacations to Disney World. He played as hard as he worked, enjoying time outdoors with family whether it was on a boat, in a deer blind or sitting around a table showcasing his humor and quick wit. Even in retirement, he always generously answered the calls of anyone who asked his medical opinion and continued to be a valuable voice to those who suffered with medical difficulties.

After serving the medical needs of thousands of patients, he retired in 2017 due to health issues, but continued enjoying life surrounded by his loving family and friends. His life was a testament to his strong will, love of life and determined spirit.

Stephen is preceded in death by his father Carl Miles, his brother Carl Dennis Miles. Stephen is survived by his mother Wanda Miles, his wife Suzan Miles, his children Dusty and Brittany Miles, his sister Kathy Crews and her husband Larry and their children Cody and Clayton Phillips, his brother David Miles and his wife Toni and their children Kira Bloomer and Brody Miles, His foster daughter, Shelby Leblanc and her husband Justin and their children James and Hunter Leblanc, and many cousins.

A memorial service will be held at a later date this spring. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations sent to The Immune Deficiency Foundation at www.PrimaryImmune.org to fund primary immune research and education.
